On October 30, 2011, the Religious Education students will be Trick or Treating for   UNICEF   at the end of our church service. The orange UNICEF collection box has become a tradition in North America since 1950. We are asking congregation members to bring change and/or bills to place in these boxes each child will be carrying as they parade through the chapel in their Halloween costumes.

The United Nations Childrens' Fund was created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1946. In November, 1989, the UN adopted 54 principles that make up the Rights of the Child. Each day 21,000 children die unnecessarily, and UNICEF is doing everything it can to reduce this number.

UNICEF:

  • Provides child immunizations and vaccinations
  • Helps families obtain clean drinking water and sanitation
  • Helps protect children against malaria
  • Participates in the fight against AIDS by caring for affected children and by helping pregnant, infected women get the drugs they need to prevent transmission to their babies.
  • Provides nourishment to prevent malnutrition
  • Works to protect children from abuse, child exploitation and trafficking
  • UNICEF also strives to provide quality education for children in need.

At the beginning of the 54 principles for the United Nations Children’s Fund, the quote that describes the care offered to children says, "Whoever we are, wherever we live, these are the rights of every child under the sun and moon and the stars".
