Refreshments, Evelyn Badzik and Erika Baer. $2 suggested donation towards refreshments on night of meeting.
May book, People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks.
NEXT MOVIE NIGHT....April 23rd, 6PM in the Annex
Continuing with our Welcoming Congregation theme, our movie is a documentary called Before Stonewall. In 1969 the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in NY City's Greenwich Village, leading to three nights of rioting by the city's gay community. With this outpouring of courage and unity the Gay Liberation Movement began.
Before Stonewall pries open the closet door, setting free the dramatic story of the sometimes horrifying public and private existences experienced by gay and lesbian Americans since the 1920's. Revealing and often humorous, this widely acclaimed film relives the emotionally-charged sparking of today's gay rights movement, from the events that led to the fevered 1969 riots to the many milestones in the brave fight for acceptance. Experience the fascinating and unforgettable decade-by-decade history of homosexuality through eye-opening historical footage and amazing interviews. Narrated by Rita Mae Brown. This film is available through your local libraries...they will order it for you from around the metropolitan area. $8 per person, drinks, dinner and discussion. Sign up in foyer.
WELCOMING CONGREGATION BOOK DISCUSSION
On May 14th Jud Cole will lead a discussion on What the Bible Says About Homosexuality by Daniel Helminiak. The author applies a historical/critical approach to the text of the Christian Bible, as opposed to a literal one, to determine what was really thought about homosexuality at the time various parts were written. This is, of course, the same approach that we, as Unitarian Universalists, use when we read religious works. Dr. Helminiak is a Roman Catholic priest, with Ph.D's in both systematic theology and educational psychology. This is a short book -- less than 150 pages -- and is easily read by the lay person.
If you need child care for any of the above events, please sign up for it when you sign up for the event and also let Julie Artis in the RE Wing know.
